How would you explain the nature of pre-Marxian Socialism? Critically examine.
Socialist Thought › Socialism
Answer:
Pre-Marxian socialism, which Marx and Engels labelled 'utopian', arose in response to the miseries of early industrial capitalism. It condemned exploitation and envisaged cooperative alternatives, but rested on moral appeal and rational persuasion rather than on any theory of historical change.
Its principal exponents
- Saint-Simon called for an industrial society directed by scientists and producers for the common good.
- Charles Fourier proposed self-sufficient cooperative communities called phalanxes.
- Robert Owen created a model industrial community at New Lanark and later New Harmony in America.
- Louis Blanc advocated state-financed national workshops guaranteeing the right to work.
- Proudhon declared that property is theft and looked to mutualist association.
Its characteristic features
- It rested on moral condemnation of inequality and an appeal to reason and benevolence.
- It hoped to persuade the rich and the powerful to reform society voluntarily.
- It favoured small cooperative communities as models to be imitated.
- It generally rejected class conflict and revolutionary methods.
The Marxian critique
- Marx and Engels valued their insight into capitalism's evils but called their remedies utopian.
- They lacked a scientific analysis of capitalist production and of surplus value.
- They failed to identify the proletariat as the agent of change.
- Their blueprints ignored the material laws of historical development.
Pre-Marxian socialism was therefore essentially ethical, experimental and reformist in nature. As Engels acknowledged in 'Socialism: Utopian and Scientific', these thinkers were pioneers whose critique of industrial society prepared the ground for Marxism, even though they lacked the historical theory that would give socialism its later revolutionary force.
