Paper II · 2016 · Q 5(a) · 10 Marks

"Karl Marx applied his critical intelligence to Wealth of Nations ... Where Smith had seen only the sunlight, Marx saw only the shadows." Critically examine.

Socialist Thought › Marx and Smith

Answer:

The contrast captures the essential difference between the two thinkers. Both analysed the same capitalist economy with rigour, but Smith saw in it a natural harmony producing general prosperity, while Marx saw exploitation, alienation and inevitable crisis.

Smith's sunlight

  • The Wealth of Nations of 1776 held that self-interest, guided by the invisible hand, serves the common good.
  • Division of labour was seen as the source of rising productivity and wealth.
  • Free markets and free trade would enrich all nations.
  • He nonetheless warned against monopoly and noted the deadening effect of repetitive labour.

Marx's shadows

  • He accepted Smith's labour theory of value and drew opposite conclusions from it.
  • Surplus value, appropriated by the capitalist, is the source of profit and of exploitation.
  • Division of labour alienates the worker from his product, his work and himself.
  • Competition tends to concentration, and crises of overproduction are inherent.
  • He predicted that capitalism would generate the class that would overthrow it.

Assessment

  • Marx read Smith and Ricardo closely and built upon their analysis.
  • Both were describing the same system from opposite social standpoints.
  • Smith wrote before industrial capitalism had displayed its full social costs.

Their lasting influence

  • Smith's arguments underpinned nineteenth-century free-trade policy.
  • Marx's analysis shaped socialist and communist movements worldwide.
  • Both remain foundational texts of modern economic and social thought.
  • Later economists have drawn selectively on each tradition.

The statement is therefore apt as a summary of their opposed conclusions. As historians of economic thought observe, Marx did not reject classical political economy but turned its own premises against it, so the difference between sunlight and shadow reflects a difference of standpoint rather than of analytical method.
