Do you think that the United Nations Organisation has played a significant role in resolving international disputes and ensuring peace in the world?

23. The World after World War II › The United Nations and world peace

Answer:

Founded in 1945 to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, the United Nations has had a mixed but significant record in maintaining peace and resolving disputes.

Significant Contributions

  • Peacekeeping operations in many conflict zones (Congo, Cyprus, Middle East) have helped contain violence.
  • Mediation and a forum for dialogue that prevented some conflicts from escalating.
  • Decolonisation, disarmament efforts, and humanitarian, health and development work (through agencies like WHO, UNICEF).

Limitations

  • The veto power of the five permanent members often paralysed the Security Council, especially during the Cold War.
  • Failure to prevent several wars and genocides (e.g., Rwanda) and dependence on member states' will and funds.
  • Perceived domination by big powers and need for reform.

Assessment

  • The UN could not abolish war, but it has moderated conflicts and advanced global cooperation.

Therefore, the UN has played a significant, if imperfect, role in resolving disputes and promoting peace, and remains indispensable despite the need for reform.
