Why was the apartheid policy introduced in South Africa? What were its main features?

24. Liberation from Colonial Rule › Africa — Apartheid to Democracy

Answer:

Apartheid was formally introduced in South Africa after the National Party came to power in 1948. It was a system of institutionalised racial segregation designed to preserve white supremacy, control black labour and prevent political equality for the non-white majority.

Reasons for Introduction of Apartheid

White minority fear:

  • Whites were a minority but controlled political and economic power.
  • They feared black majority rule and social equality.
  • Apartheid aimed to maintain white dominance permanently.

Labour control:

  • South Africa’s mines, farms and industries depended on cheap black labour.
  • Racial laws controlled movement, residence and employment.
  • Apartheid ensured labour supply without political rights.

Afrikaner nationalism:

  • The National Party represented Afrikaner interests and memories of British domination.
  • Apartheid became a way to assert Afrikaner political control and racial ideology.

Economic and social segregation:

  • Earlier segregation already existed before 1948.
  • Apartheid systematised and intensified it through law.

Main Features of Apartheid

Racial classification:

  • The Population Registration Act classified people as white, African, coloured or Indian.
  • Rights and opportunities depended on racial category.

Residential segregation:

  • The Group Areas Act assigned separate residential areas for different races.
  • Forced removals uprooted non-white communities.

Pass laws and movement control:

  • Africans had to carry passes to enter urban areas.
  • Mobility was controlled to meet labour needs.

Bantustans:

  • Africans were assigned to homelands or Bantustans.
  • These were presented as separate political units, denying them citizenship in South Africa.

Political exclusion and repression:

  • Non-whites were denied equal voting rights.
  • Anti-apartheid organisations like the ANC were banned.
  • Leaders such as Nelson Mandela were imprisoned.
  • Therefore, apartheid was introduced to preserve white supremacy, control black labour and suppress democratic equality. Its features made South Africa a racially authoritarian state despite its parliamentary appearance.
