“The American War of Independence finally ended in 1783 when Britain acknowledged the independence of the United States of America.”

17. Origins of Modern Politics › American Revolution and the Constitution

Answer:

The American War of Independence began as a colonial struggle against British taxation and imperial control, but it ended as the birth of a new sovereign state. The formal end came with the **Treaty of Paris, 1783**, when Britain recognised the independence of the United States of America.

Course towards Independence

  • The Declaration of Independence in 1776 announced the colonies’ claim to sovereignty.
  • American victory at Saratoga in 1777 encouraged French support, internationalising the war.
  • The decisive defeat of Cornwallis at Yorktown in 1781 made British victory impossible.
  • Peace negotiations followed, leading to the Treaty of Paris.

Treaty of Paris, 1783

  • Britain recognised the independence of the thirteen colonies.
  • The United States gained territory up to the Mississippi River.
  • The treaty established the United States as an independent actor in international politics.

However, independence did not solve all problems. The new republic faced issues of federal authority, debt, slavery and relations with Native Americans. Still, 1783 was historically decisive because British recognition converted revolutionary assertion into accepted international sovereignty.
