The Congress Socialist Party agenda was not to cut off from the Congress, but “intended to give the Congress and the national movement a socialist direction”. Analyse.
11. Other strands in the National Movement › The Left within the Congress; Congress Socialist Party
Answer:
The Congress Socialist Party (CSP), founded in 1934, represented the socialist current within the Indian National Congress. Its leaders did not initially intend to break away from the Congress. They wanted to radicalise the national movement from within and give it a socialist orientation rooted in anti-imperialism, peasant-worker mobilisation and social justice.
Formation and Ideological Background
- The CSP emerged in the context of the Great Depression, growth of socialist ideas and dissatisfaction with purely constitutional politics.
- Leaders such as Jayaprakash Narayan, Acharya Narendra Dev, Ram Manohar Lohia and others played important roles.
- They accepted the Congress as the broad platform of anti-colonial struggle.
- Their aim was to bring socialism into the mainstream of nationalism.
Agenda within the Congress
- The CSP wanted the Congress to adopt a programme of economic equality and social transformation.
- It supported peasant and worker organisation, land reform, civil liberties and anti-capitalist measures.
- It opposed imperialism as well as indigenous exploitation.
- It tried to link political freedom with socio-economic freedom.
Role in National Movement
- Socialists participated in Congress movements and mass struggles.
- They strengthened kisan sabhas, labour movements and youth mobilisation.
- During the Quit India Movement, socialist leaders played an important underground role.
- Their activism made nationalism more radical and mass-oriented.
- Why Not Cut Off from Congress?
- The Congress was the largest anti-colonial platform and had mass legitimacy.
- Leaving it would have isolated socialists from the national movement.
- The CSP believed that socialist transformation required working among Congress masses.
Limitations
- The CSP could not fully change Congress economic policy before independence.
- Differences existed between Gandhians, conservatives, socialists and communists.
- Its organisational strength remained uneven and often urban-intellectual.
Therefore, the CSP was not a separatist formation at its origin. It was an internal ideological pressure group seeking to give the Congress a socialist direction. Its importance lay in broadening Indian nationalism from political freedom to social and economic transformation.
