What were Brahmadeya grants? How do you account for the large number of such grants in the early medieval period?
13. Early Medieval India, 750-1200 › Agrarian economy; Indian Feudalism
Answer:
Brahmadeya grants were land grants made to Brahmanas, often with revenue rights and tax exemptions. They became especially common in the early medieval period and played an important role in agrarian expansion, Brahmanical legitimation and regional state formation.
Nature of Brahmadeya Grants
- They were usually tax-free or revenue-assigned villages given to individual Brahmanas or groups of Brahmanas.
- In south India, they often formed Brahmana settlements with administrative and ritual privileges.
- Inscriptions mention exemptions from taxes, rights over land revenue and protection from interference by royal officials.
Reasons for Large Number of Grants
- Rulers used such grants to acquire religious merit and Brahmanical legitimacy.
- They helped bring forest, tribal and marginal areas under settled agriculture.
- Brahmanas acted as agents of Sanskritic culture, ritual authority and social integration.
- Land grants also helped rulers reward supporters when cash resources were limited.
R.S. Sharma links such grants with early medieval agrarian expansion and feudal tendencies, while B.D. Chattopadhyaya sees them as part of regional state formation. Thus, Brahmadeya grants were religious, economic and political instruments in early medieval society.
