"The Trade Union Movement in India not only supported the call for national struggle at critical junctures, but also impacted its course and character in several ways." Critically examine.

Indian National Movement › Trade Union Movement

Answer:

The Indian trade union movement, which took organised shape with the founding of the All India Trade Union Congress in 1920, was closely intertwined with the national struggle, supporting it at critical moments while also broadening its social base and lending it a sharper, more radical and socialist outlook.

Support for the national struggle

  • Workers participated in the Non-Cooperation, Civil Disobedience and Quit India movements.
  • Strikes and industrial action added economic pressure to political agitation, as in 1928-29 and 1946.
  • The AITUC linked labour's demands to the wider demand for national freedom.

Impact on course and character

  • It infused the movement with issues of class, wages and social justice, widening its concerns beyond the middle class.
  • The growing socialist and communist influence within labour pushed the movement leftward.
  • Yet tensions arose between purely economic aims and the Congress's political priorities, and the movement sometimes split.

Milestones and divisions

  • The AITUC was founded in 1920 with Lala Lajpat Rai as its first president.
  • The Bombay textile strikes and the Girni Kamgar Union showed labour's organised strength.
  • The Meerut Conspiracy Case (1929-33) turned communist labour leaders into national figures.
  • The AITUC split in 1929 over the question of political affiliation and methods.
  • The Royal Commission on Labour and later legislation responded to this pressure.

The trade union movement thus both supported and shaped the national struggle, adding a working-class dimension and a socialist edge to it. As labour historians note, it broadened the movement's base even as its relationship with mainstream nationalism remained, at times, an uneasy one.
