How were the Princely States integrated into the Indian Union after Partition? What role did Sardar Patel play in it?
13. Consolidation as a Nation › Integration of the princely states
Answer:
At independence, over 500 princely states had to be integrated into India. Through a mix of persuasion, appeal to patriotism and firmness, this was largely achieved, with Sardar Patel playing the decisive role.
The Process of Integration
Instrument of Accession:
- The States Department, under Patel and V.P. Menon, persuaded rulers to accede on defence, foreign affairs and communications.
- Appeals to national unity and generous privy purses eased accession before 15 August 1947.
Difficult cases:
- Junagadh: accession to Pakistan reversed by a plebiscite.
- Hyderabad: integrated through "Operation Polo" (police action, 1948).
- Kashmir: acceded after tribal invasion.
Patel's Role
- As Home Minister and head of the States Ministry, he combined tact and firmness — the "Iron Man" who welded states into the Union.
- Followed up accession with democratic integration and reorganisation of states.
Therefore, the princely states were integrated through the Instrument of Accession backed by diplomacy and, where needed, force — an achievement in which Sardar Patel's statesmanship was central.
