“‘Roaring Twenties’ in Europe and America had many positive points. It helped women to uplift themselves in the region.”

22. World Wars › World War I — Causes and Consequences; societal implications

Answer:

The Roaring Twenties was a period of economic growth, consumer culture, jazz, cinema and social change, especially in the United States and parts of Europe. It created new opportunities for women, though these gains were uneven and limited.

Positive Changes for Women

Political rights:

  • Women gained voting rights in several countries around and after the First World War.
  • In the U.S., the 19th Amendment granted women suffrage in 1920.
  • Political citizenship gave women a stronger public voice.

Employment and education:

  • More women entered offices, shops, teaching, nursing and service sectors.
  • Female education expanded in urban middle-class society.
  • Wartime work experience had already challenged older gender roles.

Cultural freedom:

  • The image of the “flapper” symbolised new fashion, mobility and personal freedom.
  • Women participated more visibly in cinema, music, clubs and consumer culture.
  • Ideas about marriage, sexuality and independence began to change.

Limitations

Uneven upliftment:

  • Working-class women continued to face low wages and insecurity.
  • Rural women saw fewer changes.
  • Patriarchal expectations remained strong.

Conservative backlash:

  • Many societies criticised new women’s freedom as moral decline.
  • Therefore, the Roaring Twenties did help women gain visibility, rights and cultural freedom, especially in urban Western societies. However, upliftment was partial, class-bound and vulnerable to economic crisis after 1929.
