Critically assess the role of imperial Karkhanas in Mughal India. How did they reflect the ideological and functional imperatives of the Mughal State?
22. Economy and society, in the 16th and 17th Centuries › craft production
Answer:
Imperial karkhanas were royal workshops maintained by the Mughal state. They produced luxury goods, weapons, textiles, ornaments, carpets, manuscripts, furniture and objects required for the court, army and palace. They were not only economic institutions but also symbols of imperial power.
Functional Role of Karkhanas
Supply to court and army:
- Karkhanas produced goods needed by the royal household, nobility and military establishment.
- They supplied arms, armour, tents, textiles, jewellery and ceremonial objects.
- This reduced dependence on private suppliers for important state needs.
Promotion of crafts:
- Skilled artisans worked under imperial supervision.
- Mughal karkhanas encouraged refinement in textiles, carpets, miniature painting, metalwork and luxury crafts.
- They helped standardise quality and design.
Administrative importance:
- Karkhanas were carefully supervised by officials and maintained detailed accounts.
- Their functioning reflected the organised and bureaucratic nature of the Mughal state.
Ideological Role of Karkhanas
Expression of imperial grandeur:
- Luxury objects produced in karkhanas projected the wealth, taste and authority of the emperor.
- Courtly splendour was part of Mughal kingship.
- Gifts, robes of honour and ceremonial objects reinforced loyalty among nobles.
Limitations:
- Karkhanas were mainly court-oriented and did not transform the entire economy.
- Their benefits were concentrated around imperial and elite consumption.
Irfan Habib views Mughal production largely within the framework of surplus extraction and elite demand. Therefore, karkhanas reflected both the functional needs of administration and army, and the ideological need to display imperial magnificence and authority.
